Habitat - Indoor :: Water getting too warm.

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Hi, everyone. My boy is housed in a 55 gallon aquarium in an outer room of our house. Some areas of the country call it an Arizona room, others a Florida room, and others still a Mother-in-law room. Whatever you call it it's basically a deck with walls. It's not connected to the AC, so it doesn't get as cold as the house, yet it's still somewhat cooler than outside. This being said, it's the only option for my boy's big tank. The problem is, his water is getting to about 82 degrees because the room temp is about that of the average basking area for a RES. Any tips on how I can keep his water cool? Other than adding cool water. That's the one option I'm already trying. I am working to keep his water cool, I just wonder if anyone faces this issu/how you deal with it. Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem but so far haven't found method of cooling the water besides throwing some ice cubes or frozen water bottles in the tank. By the way I am using a temporary 20 gallon tank and will upgrading to a bigger tank this weekend, I am wondering if that may help with the water staying cool.

Probably the easiest thing you can do is direct a fan at the water surface. Evaporation cools the remaining water. Here is an article that should help both of you. Good luck.

We're actually moving his tank inside. We found a spot! Haha
Kansasslider, you will be happy to know I am switching my boy's tank over to sand! It's a lighter option than the river rocks, so there I go eating my words about never using sand in his tank.
My only concern with blowing fans on the water would be if the fan blew directly on the sunning area too. Wouldn't want a turtle to end up with a cold in the mean time!

It might not look great, but can you point it in a different direction?

Another sand convert.lol You will not be disappointed. I'm glad you were able to move it inside. My tank is in an unfinished part of my basement. I fight humidity with a dehumidifier and cold winters with 2 water heaters. I guess we all have some challenges to overcome.

If someone had to use fans, especially with an ATBA they could put the fan by the tank, but in front of the basking area so the air wouldn't blow on it.
Hahaha Yes, I am a sand convert. I'm a little nervous about it, I'll admit, but knowing that at least one person has used it without issue helps.

I was watching a vid on YouTube and the guy was using something like that but it was USB port powered. "Low energy consumption" I assume?
