Habitat - Indoor :: Water quality and smell

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

I had a good run with my 29 gallon setup for a hand full of months, clear water no smell etc. Now after 2-3 days the water is murky and smells horrible. I have a Fluval 306 canister filter and the intake is always getting clogged around the ball I clean that every few days, I have recently replaced the pads in the filter and the carbon media to try and resolve this issue. No success there. I am starting to get a bit frustrated and I don't want to keep throwing money at the system if it isn't going to resolve the issue. Any ideas?

Murky water would make me think mini-cycle--something has either killed off some of the bacteria or you are suddenly getting more waste/decaying matter than the filter can handle.

Do you know what your ammonia/nitrite levels are?

It does sound like a mini-cycle or a clogged filter or a combo of both. How big is the turtle? What media do you current have in the filter? You should have at least course pads and mostly ceramic biomedia. These should only be cleaned in unchlorinated water.

You'll probably need to do partial water changes until your filter re-establishes it bacteria colony which may take a couple of weeks.
