Hi all,

So I'm in the process of upgrading my tank and I've been trying to get equipment where possible that will be re-usable the next time I upgrade.

Currently I've got two YBS in a 33 gallon plastic container. One I realize isn't going to hold much more than about 20 gallons without reinforcing it (which I plan to do if I don't get a chance to upgrade them to a proper 60 gal tank sooner than that).

So I've read that using filters that are more powerful isn't a bad idea. But is it safe to get an over-powered heater? For instance, if I got this; http://www.amazon.com/Fluval-E-300-Watt ... supplies_2 with a view to heating that 33 gallon tank, later a 60 gal. Would that be entirely safe?

Thanks,

-MVB

You'll be fine. I have the same heater, because Tobii likes to peck at the heater. All that will happen is that it will heat the water faster and not run as much.

However, with that heater, you will want to make sure it's in the return flow of a filter. If not, the plastic case traps the heat and it shuts off.

That's a pricey heater may I suggest an Aqueon pro or eheim jager? And why not buy a larger tank?

MVB i'd say go with a jager they are really nice and good quality your turtles wont be able to break them either they are pretty solid. Just make sure you are able to fit whatever heater you get into your enclosure as they have different lengths. Good thing about jagers is that they are fully submersible so you can even place them horizontally underwater. What kind of filter are you planning to get? Try to stay away from Rena their prices are awesome but their new filters have been leaking I had to return 2 and eventually purchased an eheim pro III. Its best to get the biggest filter you can to avoid upgrades in the future.

Aqueon pro heaters are also good submersible and come with a lifetime warranty! Jager heaters only carry a three year warranty I own both. Can't say either is better.

So a high wattage won't overheat the tank or cause problems?

It'll just heat the water up faster.
