Hi there, first time turtle owner.

I had a questions regarding tank size. I am quite aware that the rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch. My red ear sliders right now are 3-4" - give or take. I couldn't attached a photo of my tank but it's about 15 gallons so, understandably very small.

I was wondering whether this was a big deal? I should be getting a 75-90 gallon tank for Christmas - I am unable to afford one sooner.

Also, are there any other cheaper ways I can expand the tank in the meantime?

Thanks!

Welcome and Hello! How many RES do you have? RES will become more aggressive as it grows old, so you'll have to separate them at some point or buy/build a separate tank. You can try a stock tank (but you won't be able to look through the sides), a kiddie pool (the cheapest), or if you want an outdoor enclosure, just dig a hole in your backyard, use a pond liner, get an adequate filter, and fence in the area (use cheap DIY materials), but the last one will need a lot of time, planning and effort. Hope this helps!

If you are just looking to make it to Christmas, a big Rubbermaid container is also an option.

Don't forget to check out craigslist, some people are just trying to get rid of their tanks and you can get a really good deal. Make sure to check for leaks and dimensions to be sure of the size.
