Basking temperatures

Hi all.

A few months back, I had a little Mississippi Map turtle that had died, so we decided to try again. We now have a Western Painted turtle that is about 3-4 inches and is living in my old 10 gallon tank until we get this big 65 gallon tank set up. I have found a speed bump, though.

The basking area has a florescent light on it that emits the correct amount of radiation. The problem is that the area is not warm at all. The hood that the light is resting on makes it difficult to get a lamp's light in. So... What should I do?

Is this the 10 gallon or 65 gallon? Many people use or make screens for them and they can easily just clamp the lamp to the side of the tank. Other simple solutions would be to hang lights from the ceiling or a shelf.

It is the 65 gallon and the hood that the florescent light is on makes it hard to nearly impossible to clamp a lamp on and still have light go in.

Does the hood cover the whole top of the tank?

You might want to ditch the hood for a DIY screen.

I would ditch the hood.
