So a ten gallon tank with one of those cheap aquarium filters, the heater I use for Nemo currently, and fish would work for a grow out tank?

Yes, but if you're planning on having the fish breed as well. either get a prefilter, or a sponge filter. This will help the Frys from getting suck into the filter, so there's more gain. Also provide hiding space if you're breeding guppies, or you'll have to remove the mother after birth, otherwise you'll see the mother eating all the frys.

Sign up for the site, it's very informative especially if you're planning on planted tank. It's free. There's a lot of people giving away plants etc, just pay shipping.

I'll sign up when I get off work.
I'll look into a sponge filter. Thank you :).

So, I have a new questions regarding the new tank.
My dad says they have 100lb bags of sand at Home Depot for less than ten dollars?
My only concern is, even after looking at the FAQ sand forum, is what am I looking for?
In regards to grain size, "ingrediants", and consistency?
Of course I'm worried about Nemo eating any bigger grains since he is barely 1.5 inches long.
This may sound like a stupid questions, but what about sand in a turtles eyes/nose? Is that even a thing if he were to "dig" in it?

Again, sorry if there's are completely stupid questions.

I'd recommend pool filter sand but you can use any Silica based sand. Quicrete brand playsand is probably the cheapest you can find.

Thank you!
I'll look into Quicrete.
We have pool filter sand for our pool and it seemed pretty expensive when we bought it, Maybe it was just the Home Depot we went to, I don't know.
Thanks Steve!

I paid $20 for 50 lb bags of pool filter sand. With a lot of play sand, your getting wider variance in grain size and more dust, which means lots more rinsing. I've heard that is less true with quickcrete.

I think I'm going to get two fifty pound bags of Quickcrete. THe reviews look pretty good.

Apparently for a two inch layer I need 67 pounds. I'd rather have some left over than not enough.

I found this filter on Amazon for only 113 dollars. The reviews look good, but has anyone tried this filter and been successful or no?

It's a good filter. I still use two of them (they used to be called the XP3). Some have recently complained about leaking, but a lot of times it's user error. Still, there is always a risk with canister filters leaking and always carefully check after water changes or filter maintenance for any drips.

Okay, thank you. So I could use one for Nemo?
How exactly does the in-take, out-put work? how do they need to be positioned in the tank? Would it be possible to use a smaller filter on the opposite end?

This is for a 55 gallon? If so, you're fine. It can even be used in larger tanks so a smaller filter will not be necessary. With canister filters, one plastic tube is the intake and another returns the water. Sometimes it comes in the form of an optional spray bar.

How big is Nemo again?

He's 1.5 inches in width.
Do I need to be worried about the "suction" coming from the tube taking the water away? Or the one putting water back in?
