My mom just got back from vacation in Florida and brought me a ton of small shells to put in Gilbert's tank, but she suggests washing them with soap first (since they came directly from the ocean), then rinsing them well and putting them in. Should I just rinse them or use soap/alcohol, or is it not a good idea to put them in?

If they are small enough to eat don't put them in the tank. You can just soak them in clean water brush them with water and put them in. I doubt the saltwater residue is anything to be concerned about.
