Habitat - Indoor :: Time for changes

Turtle tank setups and other indoor configurations.

Hello!

I wanted to introduce myself and my group of turtles and hopefully get some advise.

I have 3 RES (2 females that are both 9 inches :msgreen: :msgreen: and 1 male  that is 8 inches) that I have had since I was 7 (about 12 years). :D They started out small but have grown into monsters. :D

Over the years I have replaced the aquariums to larger and larger ones, based on the space I had and what I could afford. Currently, they are in a 48x18x18 tank filled 3/4 with water (~50 US gallons). I have a Rena XP4 filter that I clean every two weeks and I do a partial clean of the tank every month and a full clean once every two months or sooner if needed.

I know the aquarium is too small but until recently, followed advise I was given growing up and never really questioned it because the turtles had room to swim around and looked happy. I recently started researching RES online due to a turtle fight injury and I know I need a bigger space for them. My problem is that I live in an appartment atm and space is at a premium and cash is in short supply.

I would like to hold off until I cab buy an actual house and get a rubber stock 300gallon indoor space set up for them, however my male was recently the victum of a bad bite by one of the females, and the other had laid eggs in the water. The aggressor is currently living in my bathtub away from the other two.

I know that up until now I may not have been the best turtle parent, but I am willing to learn and do better. What would you recommend I do in the short term, and long term inorder to make things better for my crew of RES?

Please, any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer not to adopt them out if possible.

Thanks again!

Hello! Is the female normally aggressive? Does she stay friendly with the other female? Was she defending herself from the male? Aggression usually does not subside, so you're looking at keeping multiple tanks if you want to keep them.
