General Care Discussion :: Cats?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2006 7:07 pm   Cats?

We just adopted a cat, and while we have the tank secured from the cat entering into the tank we're worried that the cat watching the turtles will keep them from basking. Does anyone with cats have any experience with this?
Thanks!,
Adam

P.S. Here is our new cat!

I have a cat...I've had her for years so I wasn't about to get rid of her when I realized that she loved to watch my turtles. I was worried about it too though...
My turtles (especially Bobbi) think they are tougher then her though! They love when she's around b/c they like to watch her just as much. :p
I wouldn't be worried about it. Just, do be sure that the tank is very secure. My cat fell in once and she hasn't been that close ever again. HA. It was while I was cleaning, the turtles weren't in there. :)

Your cat is gorgeous!!!
Good luck with her. :)

I have two cats and they are only really interested in Hermes when I let her run around in the yard, one day they will get their noses nipped. (I have visions of running to the vet with a turtle almost the same size as the cat stuck to her nose) sometimes they watch her through the glass but the turtle doesn't really seem bothered by it as they don't sit there day and night.
Houseful of animals, 2 cats, 1 cockatiel, 1 black cap conure, 1 house gecko, albino afican clawed frog, 55 gallon tank of fish and now a Red Eared Slider.

I find it amazing that when I walk into the room, the turts go flying off the basking dock, but they won't with the cats. It isn't like they can't see them, because I can watch them watch the cats. But for whatever it's worth, mine don't bother my turt.

I think my RES are finally out of that stage when they launch off the basking dock. They will still swim down sometimes to see if I have anything... I just have to walk with my hands in pockets or behind my back though LOL

My turtles stay on their docks now too. Except when my grandparents were down...it's like they knew there were unfamiliar people in here. :)

Thanks everybody for your replies. So far, Chloe the cat doesn't seem to be keeping the guys from basking - although she becomes very alert whenever they get onto the platform! Since the top is secured and we put some icky-to-walk-on material on the top of the tank (upside down plastic rug guard - not too nice for soft paws to walk on!), Chloe definitely can't get in there and cause the poor turtles any harm.
