Cascade 400 Internal Filter

Hey guys,
I have a 30 gal tank with two cascade 400 internal filters. I have two of them as I cannot afford an external canister filter at the moment and both of these are able to handle up to 40 gal of water. My issue is when I go to clean them, as I'm removing them from their place in the tank, a lot of the gunk and dirt go back into the water, so i'm forced to take out my turtles and put them in a separate tank until i'm finished cleaning. Is there a way to clean the filters without all that gunk going back into the water? Anyone have experience with these sort of filters?
Thanks

This usually happens to all internal filters. If there is a substantial amount of debris coming out, I would put it in a fine mesh net before removing it.

30 gal tank.. Filled up with about 18 gal of water.. Two babies that are about 8 months old.. One is 2 in.. The other is 2.5 in.. I know i should have 10 gal for every in. Of water but I'm in a NYC apartment so space is limited and budget is tight.

Pretty soon you will know the genders, so I would hold off on any big purchases because, well, you might need to make even bigger purchases.
