General Care Discussion :: micropitting or scoring on shell ?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Aug 08, 2016 8:19 pm   micropitting or scoring on shell ?

I can't get clear pics cause my turtles are squirmy . I've had this ongoing problem for a while . I've got a shell rot problem with one turt or so I think it's shell rot and a fungus on a baby Mississippi Map . But I also have 3 res in the same tank that look like they have some unshed scutes but they bask all the time , but it looks like little tiny craters on the shell of the turtle . Can anyone help on how to get rid of the pitting ? Like I said I can't get good pics cause I can't get the turtles to hold still !

In the top pic, I don't think it's shell rot. The pitting fortunately does not look deep. I'd do some gentle cleaning (use chlorhexidine aka Hibiclen or Betadine) and make sure that turtle can bask and the carapace AND plastron can dry off.

The Mississippi Map does have shell fungus on the carapace :(

The male RES has what I would think is a bacterial infection. Micropitting is a good description, and this usually goes away after one or two sheds. Fungus will linger unless treated.

Ok what can I use to treat the fungus ? I can't get a hold of silver sulfadiazine cream around here .-. And I can get betaine at the pharmacy

Now this is the same turtle . I took him out of the tank last night I used a tooth brush and some mild soap (carefully so I didn't get it in his eyes) and gave him a gentle scrub then I put a thin coat of A & D ointment . Also known to some of you know as diaper rash cream lol . But there's many uses for it any how when I woke up I felt like doody and totally forgot I had him dry docked over night so I ran back upstairs and checked him and he looked like this ^.^ but you can still see spots that are still white . So ill keep up the treatment until I see a complete cease of the white fungus lol

silver sulfadiazine is the only thing I've personally seen work. Betadine may disinfect, but it won't stop shell fungus.

Well he's still clear as of right now . Like I said I'll continue treatment but if I see no more improvement I'll see what else I can do :) but darn I was just at the pharmacy I should have snagged some betaine for my big Map turtle *face palm*

He was just chillin at thw bottom of the tank not moving and I went over there and sure enough he was flashing his man parts LOL he's about 3 1/2 inches maybe bigger . But I for sure know he's a dude now xD I knew before cause his claws are long and so is his tail

Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen my male RES do it, I guess it's something they (fortunately) grow out of.

He kept doing it last night lolol. Me and my boyfriend had a sight xD he did it like 5 times over a 4 hour period. But I repeated the treatment last night and all is still good . I'll keep treating the shell for about a week and then I'll stop for about a week and see if the mysterious fungus returns . If not I guess I'll be in the clear :)

You're just using Betadine for the fungus?

Interesting... post before and after pics :) I know some keepers use human antifungal creams but there is some feedback that it's not safe for RES.

If you look closely at the bottom pic you can see there's still some white stuff but it's gone now after a second treatment .
