I have a pair of pink belly side necks that are about 4 years old. They have been together for their entire lives in a 50 gallon tank. A few months ago the female developed a white sore area on the top of her neck just past where it protrudes from under her shell. I originally thought her shell was rubbing it and causing the irritated area. I treated the tank and it showed signs of healing. Then it became raw again and I finally saw the male was biting at the area. I believe this is his attempt to mate? I am concerned that I may need to separate them. He has continued this behavior to the point the spot on the females neck has become raw and irritated again. Any suggestions?

Yes, it could be part of a courtship, but it also becomes part of aggression. I'm not sure how different pink belly side necks are compared to RES, but I would separate them now.
