Just a warning to all of you out there - these turtles are great at climbing! I had no idea but we let our 2 large 7 year old females out in a 3 foot fenced off area today and the one girl escaped. We thought there was no way for her to get out but we went out around 9 pm and she was gone! Needless to say I was pretty upset. The only way she could have gotten out is to climb out. We went out with flashlights searching and luckily located her pretty quickly (I am sure prayer helped). She could have been so lost in weeds, under the fence, and out the front yard - and worse yet she could have met up with some predator. I am so thankful we found her!

Wow! 3ft fence and she still got out. Did you figure out how she did it (stacking etc) or did she just start scaling the walls? That's something else. I'm glad you were able to find her.

She had to have crawled up the metal gate like a ladder. There was one other female so it is possible she started on her but that would only be a few inches. There is no other possible way she could have goten out. I looked closer today for digging and there was none. I still can't believe she climbed that high and made it out. I would have been out looking all night if we hadn't had found her.

can you picture how funny that would of been to see a turtle climbing a fence. ( is it spider man! noooo! its super turtle. hahaha) just kidding around. i am so glad you found one of your babbys. i would have been devistated if i lost one of mine. congrats on the quick recovery.

Yes, turtles are great climbers! I had a 2-foot pile of stuffed animals in my room and my 2" painted turtle (now deceased) used to climb up to the very top and just sit there for hours.

My current RES likes to climb over anything that is sitting in my living room. I have to be very careful what is on the floor when I let her out!
