General Care Discussion :: RES Has Swollen Eye!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I've decided to take care of my friend's Red eared sliders for the next two years since he has no space in his new apartment. They are living in a 50 gallon clear Rubbermaid tub with a piece of wood stretched over the surface as their basking area. the tub is outside and I'm not using a heater because there's no electricity outdoors. I know the tub is way too small for them but I don't have a lot of space for a big tank either because of all the plants. One of the turtle's shell length is 5 inches and the other one's is 6 inches. They're both confirmed as males. These guys have been living together for 5 years now and were never aggressive to each other until one day... The smaller one started to bite and claw at the bigger one. The smaller one stopped eating for a few days due to aggression and I'm aware of them getting injured. This morning I woke up and went outside to feed them but they looked like they were still sleeping. One of them (the smaller one) had its head inside of his shell and he slept the whole day, didn't even come out to play. The bigger one swam normally but his eyes were closed with the eyelids colored pink. I thought to myself, this can't be sleep swimming because only humans can sleep walk! So I went on the web to do some research and figured that they "both" have Swollen Eye Inflammation or Infection. This could be caused either from fighting or water quality. I changed the water last night but it might have happened before the water change? I don't know. These guys eat ReptoMin's Floating Food Sticks daily. Some days they don't want to eat at all. They bask under direct sunlight every day at around noon. Anyone experienced this? Any advice would be worth trying. Thanks guys!

It could be from the fighting or the fluttering at least. I'd separate them and see how it does. But if they water temp is too cold as well then they could be sick.

I will bring them both indoors starting tonight. Gonna buy each of them a medium sized plastic tub, with a place to bask and water. So last night I figured the smaller turtle didn't have swollen eye but it actually slept in its shell all day! Just the big one has it because it's the innocent one.
