Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hey, y'all.

I just added sand to my RES aquarium today. He's eating some, but I'm not too worried. I know it's a new thing and he's wondering about it. He also seems to be spitting most of it back out. You know how they take a bunch of water in with food. The water seems to be washing his mouth out. Goofy boy. This did get me thinking, though.

Just how common is sand impaction? Also, how do you handle it if it happens? The sand grains are very fine. It seems almost the size of white sugar. But, I'm the type that likes to be prepaired for anything. One post I read on here talked about feeding canned pumpkin to impacted RES... Is that actually a thing to do?

And, yes, before anyone says it I realize a vet call is the main thing. I'm just wondering about alternative options out of curiosity.

I don't think it's actually happened to any keeper here. People like to use a warm soak if their turtles are constipated though.

How warm? I'm glad to hear it isn't something that people have heard of or experienced often.

About mid-80s. If you see your turtle constantly eat it and a lot of it is mixed into the poop, then it's not a good substrate for her.

Okay, I'll keep an eye on him. I think it really is just something new, at this point.
