Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Jun 04, 2015 7:39 pm   How do you keep the water crystal clean...?

Okay so running a 55g. and noticed that I have to change water frequently.... like daily frequently. Yes I have a bad cheap filter, but I just got two new filters and wonder if this will persist after i install them?

Anything I can do to keep the water clean?

New filters or better filters? How many turtles, size of turtles and what you feed them all play major roles in water quality.

It's two in a 55gallon, ones like 5 inches, the others like 8inches or even 9... I just fed her a banquet of tilapia yesterday figuring they were probably starving. They ate quite a bit... I just got some new filters.... One notch below the 1000

Carbon and purigen work to keep my 300 crystal clear. I change the carbon and swap out the purigen and clean the whole filter once a month. Its important you only clean bio media "ceramic rings" in tank water and never let them dry out. You shouldn't need to do daily water changes. I do a 50% change once a week. I feed the fish in tank and the turtles out of the tank for less mess.

i just ran my one filter and it's already clearing up. I hope it stays like that. Sadly it did not have space for the ceramic rings...

I am going to buy someday a fluval fx6 just to make most of it a big bio media.

If I'm not mistaken they only have foam filter pads. You can remove one and add your carbon, rings, etc in its place.

It also comes with a uv sterilizer which is what cleared up my water. xD IT does make the water warm though.

Hi, sorry to resurrect this post, but does the Carbon + Purigen combination really works? I think (I never used Purigen before, but is a thought) that Purigen could absorb activated carbon dust and be exhaust too fast (unless you are using Carbon and Purigen in different filter systems for the aquarium).

According to their site, Purigen is more selective and absorbs nitrogenous organic waste, so I'm not sure it would do the same to the dust. I keep both in the same tray, and they don't seem to bother each other. I do give the carbon a very good rinse before I use it.

Great to know, I think I will buy Purigen to use with activated carbon in my aquarium. How much do you use (and for what volume of water)?. Thanks!

You can get purigen in a small bag like this one. One per filter should be fine. Image

Wow, Purigen is really cheap there... I would love to see prices like that here in Chile, but no, here 100mL cost 20usd aprox. How much do you put in your filter per liter? Their site says that 1000mL treats 4000L, but I assume that is for fish tanks, how much do you uses for turtles?
