General Care Discussion :: Turtle with puffy/swollen eyes

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu May 28, 2015 7:59 pm   Turtle with puffy/swollen eyes

Yesterday I saw one of my RES babies with half of his right eye open. I didn't suspect much as wgeb I went near him, the eye would be fully open. This morning I saw it clearly. Puffy eyes just like any other images on Google. It is only his right eye. None of the other 3 have any of the same symptons yet. May I ask some questions?

1. Is a eye drop sufficient to cure it?

2. Is it contagious?

3. What kind of measures should I take?

I honestly thought that it was a result of poking from nails as they often push one another and sometimes i would see their nails going in contact with another's eyes.
I've attached a picture of him.

Thanks!

Looks like it could be an injury. Can you take it to a vet for positive diagnosis? I would separate it from the rest. They might pick on it. Others will chime in with more help for you. Poor little thing :-(

I'd separate as well. Can you get the Zoo Med drops?

I don't think there's a vet nearby but I'll try looking for it. I've separated him from the rest but because of that he was depressed throughout the entire day and wouldn't come out of his shell until we put him back to the other tank. I will go and look for eye drops for him. (Is zoo med the best recommendation? He's still a baby RES so i'm unsure which is the best for them)

Currently his right eye seems to be much better after we isolated him from the rest for about an entire day. I'll see if the swollen eye come back tomorrow. Thanks heaps!

How long have you had the turtles? Can you post a picture of their tank?

Hi, we had them for about a few months. The tank looks like this.

It's quite small but we will be changing it as they grow larger (Maybe separate tanks might be needed in the future). We didn't put in any rocks/sand/plants because they tried eating everything that we put in. (Researched about turtles consuming rocks and i was worried that they will not be able to pass out the rocks after eating them) I've asked some shop owners and friends and they said we didn't need a heater due to the constant warm climate. The tank is next to a glass pane and there is no sunlight in this area.

Do a 30 minute soak in 75% carrot juice/25% water. I have read so many people with this on a FB forum that has worked immediately. They turtles seem to love it. Just fill a container up to where it just comes to the tip pf their shell. You don't want them to be totally submersed in it.

How are the eyes now? If its due to a Vitamin A deficiency you can use this

Hi! His eyes seems to be slightly better. Even though there are occasions where he would close that one eye, it's not as puffy as before.

I will try the carrot juice/water thing if i can get my hands on some pure carrot juice (Or maybe make them myself if it's possible) Thanks for the tip!
