Unless it's sand, don't use any substrate that is smaller than your turtle's head. Larger gravel could be even more dangerous.

Yep! Get rid of the gravel, it's for fish and only! I always use river rocks, but I just read that sand would be just fine- if goes through their digestive system. I'll be soon putting in play sand- I currently have a bare bottom tank. :)

River rocks trap debris and make cleaning a tank a pain! Sand on the otherhand is real easy to keep clean. No gravel people!!

The previous owner of my RES said eating gravel was normal, I'm glad I checked myself and quickly removed all the gravel. They seem to gulp anything down that's in the tank that will fit in their mouths.

If you don't like bare floor you could always print some backgrounds (like this http://www.shedswarehouse.com/images/Huge/5747.jpg) and put it under the tank. That's what I'm planning to do with my 80 gal.
I still keep a few big pebbles inside because they have fun with it.

oof this is why im glad i kept my turtle tank substrateless. its so much easier to clean that way anyway. i would one day like to have some moss carpeting though
