By gravel, do you mean small pieces or all stones, like the bigger rounder pebbles?

Anything smaller than the turtle's head can cause an impaction. If you use a substrate, we suggest sand though even that can cause impaction if aggressively eaten.

no mas pebbles- So now what...? ~

Hey- I am officially and permanently off of pebbles. Wow. I'm so glad Penelope was ok after that; must've been traumatic.

Question though: Should I go with large rocks? I have hatchlings and I've seen them get almost-stuck under/in-between the couple rocks in their outside/basking tank. They're just so small...

I've had "play sand" recommended to me- what is that? Large-grain sand? Would that be better?

Thanks people~

Pool filter sand is usually recommended. As for larger rocks, that depends. River rock is good too, though that would likely trap some waste.

I highly don't recommend Gravel, because they might choke on it.

They can make it foggy too.

I'm a "bare bottom" guy. It is soooo much easier to clean a tank. For quite a while I used colored glass rocks and every time I cleaned a tank I cursed them all. Then I discovered all the turtle poop hiding between those rocks and I got converted. Now I can see every little speck and if my fish don't clean up everything or crap doesn't get sucked into the main filter, I get them with my little FX200.

Love it! Thank you! I removed George's rocks and she seems to prefer the extra space since her current tank is a bit small. Yet another reason to chuck the rocks!

For gravel, would it prevent the turtles eating it if I made the gravel size larger? I'm considering adding gravel to my 3 turtle's tanks. My turtles are 8cm, 6cm and 5cm respectively and the gravel I bought is white and pea-sized.
