Yes, you need a prescription in the US. The other methods don't work that well (I've tried several of them) ... maybe wait for some shedding and hope it doesn't come back as quickly. Fungus is not immediately harmful, it's those secondary infections that could be a problem. Look over the shell and look for scutes that are shedding.

even though the others dont work, isnt it worth a try rather than doing nothing?

For shell fungus in particular, I don't think there is much that work. I haven't tried Maroxy, but it's worth a shot if you don't want to go to a vet.
