Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Jan 15, 2006 6:04 pm   im such an amature...what should i do?

hello, i just got 2 babii res turtle about 2 or 3 hours ago and i have no idea what to do with them... i have no idea what basking is, so i just put them near the window for some sunlight and no they`re moving around weirdly. i think they are trying to get out or something because they keep tapping on the glass or plastic or w/e.....

so my questions are:
what is basking.
what am i suppose to do to keep them healthy.
why do they keep tapping on the glass.
how long should i keep them next to the window?
when should i move them out of the plastic container i got them in and
what should i put them in?

why did you get them if you didnt know anything, first of all, you should have only gotten one, because 2 are way to expensive to take care of. now for questions

baskign is when a turtle gets dry to digest food, you need a regular light fixture to produce heat, and one that produces UVB, normally florescent, and cost around $20

read the site for info...

they are tapping the glass cause they are begging, they want food, dont give them any if you are feeding them right

dont put them near a window, it wont help

move them to a bigger aquarium with a lot of water immediatly

aquarium

READ THE SITE!!!!!!!!! SEARCH!!!!!! that will answer all of you questions....

You should have researched more before getting them. It takes hard work and money to take care of a turtle. You have to really like this type of animal in order to keep it well. It has to become like a hobby to you.

I love turtles, always have, so when I got mines as a gift I was very happy but later became overwhelmed by how much it takes to care for it. In the end I didnt mind because I have the means to be able to do it, slowly but surely. Im sure that if I hadnt come here to know what to do, I would have had a sick turtle by now or possibly a dead one.

Look in the main page so you can read some of the information there, it will be easier. It will tell you all about it and then you can come back and ask around if there is something you dont understand.
"See the turtle of enormous girth,
On his shell he holds the Earth,
His thought is slow but always kind;
He holds us all within his mind."

First off, I think there are many on here who bought their turtles without having done any research, I was one of them. I also bought them on impulse getting 3 at one time. There are also others who have had their turtles for years and have been doing many things wrong. Now that being said. I'm glad you're taking the time to do research now instead of waiting down the line and doing harm to your turtles.. :)

It's best for you to read the forum, search for information on specific questions you have, also read the main website... that is packed with valuable information regarding just about anything you could want to know about RES. If you can't find an answer to a specific question, someone will try to help you or direct you to where you can find the proper answer.

You have a significant amount of questions which can easily be found either on the forum or the website, so I suggest you start by doing some reading :) I will answer two of your questions which if not answered soon, could cause health problems for your turtles.

how long should i keep them next to the window? You should NEVER put them next to a window. They will get no benefit from the sunlight other than perhaps some heat, which should be taken care of with a fully submersible water heater. Leaving them next to a window could cause the water to overheat and kill the turtles. Also it will cause algae to grow in the tank.

when should i move them out of the plastic container i got them in and what should i put them in?You should move them out of that NOW. That container is what we call a "death bowl" It is not suitable for anything. You should put them in a container what will allow for at least 10gallons of space per inch of shell (excluding the curve). It can be either a glass aquarium or a plastic (rubbermaid or sterlite) container. Again, please do some reading regarding the proper habitat for your new pets.

You are ultimately responsible for their health and wellbeing. May I ask your age and where you live? Just curiousity here :)

Well since your mom and dad will probably be paying for most of this stuff, do them a favor and get what you can for a low price, I just went to wal-mart today and got a bunch of stuff for about 10 dollars under for each item what all the pet store wanted.

But here's the basics of what you need

water heater
Filter 3x the size of the tank example 20 gallon tank=60 gallon tank size filter
UVA bulb
UVB bulb
Clamp lights for both of the above
a basking dock
fake plants
live plants (anacharis)
guppies or minnows
turtle food/pellets

and that's kinda the basics
She is mine and I shall call her Michelangelo!

trust me, you cant be in any more trouble than i am, i'm only 13, and i've managed to get pretty much EVERYTHING they need, you need to get your parents to help, if you cant, you'll need to give them to a more caring home
