I got 2 RES turtles 4 years ago from Chinatown. They had never showed any type of illness untill now. Every morning, I take him out to bask in the sun. I live in California(the weathers nice) , this moring i took him out again, and 5 hours later there were white stuff over every scute. Could it be just its skin starting to shed? I'm leaving for vacation in a couple of days, and the turtles will be taken care of by my grandpa, who has no knowledge of turtles, except how to feed and change his water. His personality has not changed one bit, hes still very active and lively and eats, but I fear that when I come back from vacation, he'll be dead.

Have you taken him out for that long before? Can you please input some more info about his setup (see link in my signature)?

A picture sure would help. Sounds to me like a possible fungal infection starting to develop.
