My ESL students gave me a baby RES a few weeks ago. I live in China right now so I didn't have access to proper equipment for him until recently because I had to buy it online (no pet shops near me). I used to keep him in a big washing bucket and always put him in the sun every day with basking rocks and cleaned the water daily. For the first two weeks or so he was fine. He was a little shy and would hide from me, but I would catch him swimming around and basking. He normally slept under the water. Now for about a week he has been sleeping all day and not eating. He sleeps on his basking rock and won't go in the water unless I put him in- then he wakes up, rubs his eyes, drinks some of the water (At least I think that's what he's doing), swims around for a tiny bit and then goes back to his rock and goes to sleep. I took him to the vet and the vet thinks he was hibernating because it was too cold. I finally got my UVB lamp, tank and filter 3 days ago, and nothing has changed. The tank is definitely warm enough, and the water is warm as well. But he won't go in the water unless I put him there, and he won't eat anything. I'm feeding him pellets right now because he's tiny (1in). Am I doing something wrong? The vet told me to come back in 5 days if he's not better. I even put him in his wash bucket and bring him out into the sunshine in the afternoons because he normally really likes that- but he just climbs up onto his rock and sleeps. He doesn't seem to be starving, but his poop is white? The vet told me not to worry, but it's China, so I don't really trust the vets here.

What were the water and basking temperatures? How long has it been since he has eaten? Did you actually see him eat before? Any change you can offer him some live prey, like guppies or feeder fish? Maybe even earthworms?

I don't have a thermometer and I'd have to convince another teacher to order one for me online, but I've been checking the water with my hand and it feels like it's about 80 degrees. The basking area is even warmer than that. My UVB lamp is pretty hot and Ieave it on from about 9am-midnight. He definitely ate before, but he'd never do it when I was around, so I couldn't observe him eating, I would just come back and notice there would be less pellets in his bowl. I'm not sure where to find guppies or feeder fish because unfortunately none of the pet stores in my small Chinese city carry anything for turtles besides pellets and tiny plastic turtle habitat bowls that are way too small. I can try cutting up a live shrimp like the vet suggested or anything else I can find at a Chinese grocery store.

What kind of UVB lamp are you using? Are you using the fluorescent kind? Those produce very little heat. You can use almost any kind of thermometer to take spot readings. Pellets break up easily after they've been in the water for awhile, it's possible he hasn't eaten. How big is the turtle?

I'm not sure what kind of UVB the lamp is, but the lamp is extremely hot and burns my hand it I leave it right in front of the lamp for too long. I can try to find a thermometer at the grocery store this weekend. My turtle is pretty small, only about one inch.

Alright, I'd concentrate on getting the turtle to eat first. Try the shrimp but also try to get live feeder fish. Anything that moves will entice him more. You might have to hold it by the tail to make it easier for him to catch.
