About two months ago me and my girlfriend bought two hatchlings after doing our homework, I must add. We felt ready to care for the turtles. They are about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. For the first month everything was fine. I noticed white lines around the shell of one of them. I immediately looked at this forum and others, and concluded she was growing, as she was showing no signs of being ill. She was basking, eating, swimming, sleeping just fine. She lived for another three weeks and sadly died suddenly and unexpectedly. One day she was fine, the next day she was dead. Now we have one turtle left, and are desperate to keep him. And just noticed the same thing happening to him.

as I said, he is about 1 1/2 inches. The tank is 20 gallons (I'll upgrade when he gets bigger) with a 50 gallon water filter. I do a 50/50 water change once a week and a full tank clean once a month. I have UVB, heatlight, basking area. Really tried to do everything for them. Water temperature is about 29C and basking area, depends, but is usually about +5 to 6 degrees.

The only culprit that comes right to my mind is that we have large gravel substrate, which I was hesitant about buying at first because I've heard it can cause nothing but problems, but figured I'd give it a go at first. I'm thinking there may be bacteria in it. I don't know. Here are pictures of my poor guy's shell. Its hard to see because of the glare, unfortunately. I'm ready to take him to get emergency care. Me and my GF will be absolutely devastated if we lose him too. Please, any advice may save his life.

Thank you for your time.

A sudden death can happen to any keeper, do not feel bad about it. I can remember many examples on this forum and there isn't always an answer. One thing to consider is the source of these turtles. Most of the time, they start out in unhealthy environments that stay with them before its too late to take any action.

The extra scute is fine and pretty common. Most grow and shed like the others, this one looks OK. The seams around the scute are bit dark, so I would review what his diet is like.

As for the substrate, how about a bare bottom for now?

Thank you for your fast reply steve! Good to know that more or less we're doing alright. I try to change up his diet with vegetables, carrots and lettuce, but he's extremely picky. Its hard when they are so young. I'll keep an eye on him, but I feel slightly better now. I'll also take out the rocks, it will give him an extra half inch or so to swim anyways. Thanks again!

A veggie clip is worth a shot if he's being picky. Keep us up to date and let us know of any symptoms that might concern you.

Just a quick update. He seems to be doing fine. Just as active as ever. Everything seems normal. But these 'white spots' aren't going away. If anything they are spreading. I took pictures of him today. This time underwater as it gives a different perspective. When he's underwater it almost looks like clear nail polish on his shell. When he is dry, well the pictures I posted above. Dull white, hardly visible. The quality isn't super, but it gets the point across.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Also I should mention that it appears you can scrape the white bit off gently with your fingernail. The shell seems fine underneath it. Just white, almost see-through spots...

The white is most likely fungus. The sooner it's dealt with, the better.
