Hi all! I posted about a month or so ago about my now 1 y/o res. I've been using Betadine & water solution and letting him out of his tank as often as possible. At the very least 3 hours a day. I wasn't seeing any results so I tried using a prescription strength anti fungal cream(KETOCONAZOLE) for a couple of weeks and that didn't seem to do the trick. Every time I put him back in his tank (I've been cleaning it daily) I noticed little flakes on the surface of the water the next day. Almost like when his skin is shedding. I have no idea what it could be and I just cleaned his tank so I don't have pic. Anyway I was taking pics of him and I noticed that when his eyes are shut (both eyes) this gray film (fungus?) is on his eyelids now. What could this be? If it is fungus why isn't it clearing up? His behavior is still normal. Basking, eating, swimming, sleeping all fine.

One thing I have observed for mons now is that he likes to put his head directly under the waterfall on the filter. I have a Turtle Clean 501. Could this be the culprit? I'm pretty anal about his tank being clean and I would think that if it were a cleanliness issue that this problem would be in more areas than just his head. I'll attach a recent pic on here. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have no idea what that could be. It looks similar to the grayness around his ears. Does it appear anywhere else on his skin?

No Steve no where else. I took him to a Herp Vet today and she said that it's Edema. She wants to do blood work, but I didn't have an additional $150 so that'll get done next week. I also have to take a stool sample & tank water sample up to her tomorrow. She said he also has a Vitamin A deficiency and she gave him a Vit A shot and told me to start feeding him veggies that are rich in Vit A like carrots & green peppers. Also I posted something a while back about this little white spot on his shell, that I didn't even mention to her and she pointed that out and said to start treating that with Betadine. She said he does have a Bacertia infection and gave me Baytrill Injections that I have to give to him every other day. Idk if I'm gonna be able to do it tho. She gave him the first one today and showed me how, but I have to have someone hold him for me. I was kind of overwhelmed b/c I was not expecting this to be something this serious. I know that kidney problems can cause Edema and that's probably why she wants the blood work. Is there anything else that causes this? Also she gave him a dewormer.

Never seen that before. Is she basking okay? I would keep up with the Bayril injections as it is a broad spectrum antibiotic and may clear the problem. You might want to consider dry docking her a few days and see if it scabs over.

I can't tell if it's edema, there's only the greyness? I'm also not sure what the vet would do with a stool sample and tank water. Vitamin A in too large quantities is poisonous, so I would be careful about that (it's often over prescribed). The vet said the white spot was the bacterial infection? Why a dewormer, was there evidence of that? I'm a little confused about the vet's actions.

Yes David he is basking as normally as he always has. No abnormal behaviors at all.

Steve I was wondering the same thing. I've been researching Edema in turtles and it looks nothing like what my little guy has. She suggested giving him a dewormer after the blood work but she said she could just give it to him before hand if I wanted her to so I just let her. I'm confused about the water sample too. She wants me to take it from the sponge in the filter. I'll keep you posted after his shots are done and after I take him back up there. Her name is Dr Urie and she works at the Paradise Animal Hospital in Catonsville, MD. Just outside of Baltimore.
