My turtle is just a hatchling red eared slider and I noticed he wasn't eating, and he refuses to bask or even come out of the shadows when his light is on. The expert I bought him off said he may need to be removed from the tank and left to dry under the light. While I was "manually basking" him, I noticed one eye appears cloudy. It is not swollen just hazed as opposed to the crisp other eye. He hasn't ate virtually anything at all. I feed him frozen bloodworms. I've tried substituting a few in place of cooked tuna or even peaches just in hopes he'd be at least interested. But he wasn't at all. His tank is kept warm at around 80 or 81 degrees. Any hotter and he becomes sluggish, same with colder. When his lamp is off he is energetic and strong. I'm worried he will starve soon though. Any advice to help his eye (I've heard vitamin a or a distillers water and salt solution) or to get him to eat?

What type of basking light are you using and how far is it from the basking area platform? Tell us a little more about the tank also, size/filtration/water parameters?

It's a 20 gallon filled half way, it is not filtered, the light is on top of the tank, so about six inches away and the bulb is 65 watts and the platform is a floating island.

He is 1 inch long
I've had him three days now
Water temperature is 80 or 81 degrees
I use a thermometer
I have a heater
Tank is half full (20 gallons, so 10 full)
No water conditioner
No filter
I don't know the basking temperature
There is a platform but he refuses to do anything but float beside it (and only when the light is off)
It is a floating foam dock
No UVB lamp just heat
Feeding him frozen bloodworms
He hasn't ate while in my possession
The tank is in the light of a window but not close to it
It's 2' by 1'
No it is in my bedroom which is quiet majority of the day

Can he see? Don't "manually bask" him now, try to give him some space to adjust to his new surroundings. The water temp is fine for now but focus on getting him to eat. I'd try some live minnows... hold them by the tail if you have to and let them wiggle in front of his face.

He can see, one eye is just fine. But alright. I could try that.
