I recently noticed my RES (I've had her for two years) has a bunch of fat (?) sticking out in front of her hind legs. I looked up weight issues for turtles online and found that sometimes kidney failure can be the culprit--now I'm freaking out!

Here's the issue: I just moved and the nearest vet is 30 minutes away by car; I don't have one!

She's really active, and has been showing these signs for a while, I think (I noticed it more so recently because of the move, during which I had her in really subpar conditions for several days while I tried to get my landlord to allow my tank...). She also has been eating fine--a lot, actually.

I'm wondering if maybe she's just overweight (I've still been feeding her twice daily, and high-protein diets, including a good deal of shrimp), and I know I should see a vet about her, but I wanted to see if anyone here could give me an immediate opinion first. My old vet said she's probably okay if she's active and eating, but that it's not a guarantee, and I'm really worried about her.

Please help!

I can't offer an informed opinion, but I know those who can are going to ask if you can get a pic and how much food she is getting and how big her shell is front to back.

However, eating a lot, high protein, and shrimp could lead to either. High protein diets can lead to kidney damage, or it can just lead to an overweight turtle.

Good luck, and hopefully someone with more information will chime in soon.

Either way, I guess a diet change is in order...

Sometimes those bulges deflate, as if like an air sac. My turtle had those, but when she's basking I had noticed that those bulging things disappear. I agree with ljapa, feeding her twice a day and with high protein foods may lead to a turtle being overweight. How big is she? And do you have veggies in her diet?

She's 8", and no, basically no veggies. She just never really ate them. Romaine lettuce scared her.

How big was she when you got her? If she were just a hatchling, it's most likely fat.

Yep, she was a hatchling. A friend bought her from Chinatown and I decided to take care of her.
