I have had a red eared turtle for a few years and it has always stayed in the pond during winter at the bottom. This year, it found a damp/muddy corner of my yard and buried itself with dirt and leaves. Is it OK to be out of the water for months? Should I get it out and put back into the pond? Southern California...nights into the high 30's, low 40's...days high 50's to mid 60's...

thanks for the advice...

I'm not sure, it might be better to ask someone from the California Turtle and Tortoise Club since they will be familiar with RES in your area. I would guess that it would OK to move him/her into the pond.

It should be fine. They can do that. Only thing i worry about is mice or rats getting at it. Heard lots of stories of things getting at hibernating turtles that took the land route.
