Hi!!
I have had Sheldon since the end of November. He is currently about 3.5" long and lives in a 55 gallon tank with a Fluval U4 filter, basking dock, underwater stone and "turtle grass". The tank is just over half-full so that he can stand on the underwater stone and "rest". I have some live plants in the tank but he doesn't eat them. There are some rosy reds living with him - I got a dozen, he ate 8 and the rest seem to be "friends" as they've been there for 3 weeks now. I do a 50% water change every Sunday afternoon. The tank water has been tested and all rates are well within normal for a turtle tank (according to my turtle expert). There is a Fluval heater in the tank and the tank is kept at 78 degrees. I turned up the heater last night after reading a couple of posts how that might help. So it's currently at 80. He has a basking stone and a heat lamp (which he used all day on Wednesday - stayed up there all day which really worried me) and a UVA/UVB light.
He gets fed ReptoMin in the morning and every other day he gets the frozen "juvenile turtle food" block. He also gets romaine (which he ignores), peas (which he loves), blueberries (which he loves) and cherries when I can afford them.
I gave him a couple of kernels of corn on Tuesday evening. Since then he has been listless and unresponsive. He won't touch blueberries even - which are a special treat for him. I'm terrified that I made him sick with corn (but I'd seen it posted as an occasional treat so I thought it was okay).
However he also ate one of the fish that was acting "wierd" (swimming in circles repeatedly). (I'm just adding everything I can think of...)
He is still swimming around but doesn't come to the glass when I shake the food container. (Which worries me.) He looks good, his eyes are clear, his shell looks good. I haven't pulled him out and sniffed him yet - because I didn't want to upset him anymore than he is.
At what point do I take him in? I have to drive about and hour to get to a vet and I will happily take him - I just don't want to over-react. (I did this with my dogs when I first got them.... tookthem in all the time worrying about everything. The vet thought I was ridiculous but basically told me if they're eating then don't worry.... So I know he's not a dog - but he's not eating so I'm worried.... )
