The abcess will become increasingly painful as it grows (due to pressure from the mass on the surrounding tissue), but your turtle won't be able to tell you that. Eventually, it will sicken him. Getting it taken care of as soon as possible will help your turtle recover more quickly. The vet will lance it, clean out the opening and most likely prescribe antibiotics to kill off bacteria in his system.
