Hi there,

Dave from Sheffield UK here, we've had 2 RES for about 5yrs now, their names are Yzma and Kronk, as in 'The Emperors New Groove' :D

When we got them as babies we thought the larger one was the male and named 'him' Kronk, but later realised the female grows bigger than the male, but they'd had their names for so long that we couldn't change them, so Yzma is the male and Kronk is the female.

I joined this forum after searching the 'net regarding turtle illness. Unfortunately Yzma is poorly atm, he has swollen eyes and is sneezing every time he surfaces to breathe.

just been on Amazon to buy dechlorinator and test strips, temps are ok and filter is running ok. Going to feed him some greens and carrot strips tomorrow.

Ok, time for a good read of the forum now my email has been verified :D

Welcome to the forum! For swollen eyes, look into turtle eye drops or cod liver oil if it's a Vitamin A deficiency.

Thanks Steve, he seems a bit livelier today in the dechlorinated water, but if his eyes are still swollen tomorrow it's a trip to the vets.

Welcome to the forum, so glad you could join. : )

I love that movie, great names!

For Yzma's health make sure that he has a basking sight that is nice and warm and dry, so he can escape the water completely if he wants too. Make sure they are getting plenty of plant matter as well as animal matter in their diet, as the older they get the more plants they eat in their diet.
Make certain the water is very clean with regular water changes. The dechlorinated water should help and the filter is very useful, but turtles are messier then most fish and so they need more regular water changes whether they have a filter or not.

I hope he continues to get better. Best of luck!

Are you using any type of UVB lamp?
