I live in North Carolina and the local pets stores have a great amount of supplies available for keeping Red Ear Slider turtles as pets. Unfortunately I believe it's illegal for them to sell the actual turtles in NC. Seems strange that they can sell everything you need to keep a Red Ear Slider Turtle but not the turtle itself.

Anyway, what are my options as far as purchasing a red ear slider turtle? Can you possibly order them online and receive them in NC? Is it possible that they are sold at Repticon events in NC?

I believe they are sold in SC but would prefer not to have to drive that far if there is some other way to obtain one.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You probably don't need a permit for one, but I would check. There are shady ways to get one under the guise of "education/research" or unenforced tourist stands and attractions.

Repticon would probably have sellers there. You might want to check with the local organizers first.

Adoption possibilities:

Reptile Rescue of the Carolinas (RROTC)

Raleigh Aquatic Turtle Adoption

There are also some rescues that will ship you a RES from out of state.

I live in North carolina myself. I'm pretty sure the law is that it is illigal to sell turtles in north carolina but it's not illigal to own one. I adopted mine from the guy at ccbs reptile rescue in winston salem
