Box Turtle and Tortoise Discussion :: RES vs. Malayan Box Turtle

Hi to everyone out there.. I have few questions:

1. I have one female Malayan Box Turtle, 1 years old, I put her in the same tank with my 2 RES. Can I do that?

2. Is Malayan Box Turtle aggressive? What I know this type of box turtle are very shy, slow-mo and silent. One day I saw she try to bite my RES.

3. Can I feed her with dead crickets? Should the crickets live or dead?

I've done my research about Malayan Box Turtle and a bit confused on her diet, some said when they child they are carnivorous and eat insects and worms plus veggies and fruit. But when they adult, only veggies and fruit?? So I can't feed crickets or worm anymore?

I had a malayan boxie once.. The diet as they get older is similar to a RES. They're omnivorous their whole lives so you can still offer crickets and other sources of protein, just less often for adults. I like to offer insects live simply for a bit of natural 'hunting' and mental stimulation.

They're no more agressive than any other turtle, but they require a different habitat than RES do so I suggest keeping them separate. What is your boxie setup now?

If you saw it try to bite one of your RES, I think that's a bad sign. The Malaysian Boxie will probably have to live by itself, which, since it's shy, is probably better. I'm not sure how big the tank is, but RES are territorial by nature and probably aren't crazy about the new arrival. Good luck!

Ditto with Ryan... Any signs of aggression probably aren,t good ones. I would keep them separate...

Jenaero - Owhh.. thanks for the info. I clear about it now.. I think I should cut her diet by giving protein a.ka crickets. She have some sort shell problem instead and dislike to eat cuttlebone.

Anyway my boxie setup not very big and and not very small. Since I put her together along with my RES I think it would make the space small for her.

I know setup for the boxie quite different than a RES.. I've seen some picture of others setup but the basic still the same right? My boxie loves to bask everyday at noon and nite and most of the time I think. She will jump into water when is late evening and early morning.. because is feeding time.. hehe..
