I was talking to one of the regular customers at the shop that I work at today, and somehow as it often seems to with me, the subject turned to turtles. I come to find out this woman and her husband have a whole clan of box turtles they keep as pets in their back yard. One of them was even a rescue that had a broken shell and her husband GLUED him back together. Anyway, apparently some of them had babies. She said everyone has buried themselves and are hibernating right now, but in the spring when they wake up she will GIVE me a baby!!! I am too excited. I specifically didn't want to take any turtle out of the wild, but these guys are pets, she just keeps them outside. There would never bee that many that close together in the wild. I want to keep him inside though. Of course I'll take him out when the weather is nice, but he'll sleep inside. I really want a boy but I'd take a girl too.

Speaking of boys vs. girls, does anyone know if the boys have the red eyes from birth or if the eyes change to red as the get older? What I'm asking is can I tell a boy from a girl in a young Boxie?

You're so lucky! Research the crap out of it while you have the time. You'll be glad you did.

I dont know if eye color varies by species, but I've got a proven male 3 toed boxie (3 years old) and he's got brown eyes...I wasn't able to tell his sex til I caught him fanning when he was about 2 years old.

I really don't think you can tell with eye color when they're so young. I have a small "colony" of easterns that are captive/wilds here at my work there are oribably about 8 adults 3 juvies and at least 4 babies, and the babies and even the juvies all seem to have orangeish brown eyes. Our females have more of a dull orange color to their eyes but our males eyes are just *wow*

Regardless of their eyes (sorry I go off on long pointless rants sometimes) my Varuka (she's an eastern from the little colony I spoke of) has the orangeish brown eyes and I have no real idea what gender she is though I like to think she's a she :)
