Just got a Desert Tortoise Hatchling

I set up a terrarium for it and I want to know if sand is going to be a suitable substrate for the hatchling. I have read mixed reports that it is not ok, but i dont see why that would be bad as they live... IN THE DESERT! There is alot of sand there if i am not mistaken

I think sand would heat up too, fast, but there from the sand, so naturally, they should be hotter.I think you should put some sand down.

Why not use grass hay and that solves the problem all together. The reason most people do not use sand with reptiles is due to the risk of impaction if swallowed. I thought desert tortoises where/are illegal to have in California...To be honest I would get a Sulcata at least you know you wont end up in jail or with a huge fine. Just remember they get HUGE so they are not good for small homes or apartments.
