I've been thinking,

about getting a box turtle or tortise. My grandmay used to have one. It was awesome! But my question also is what kind of tortise or boxie should I get?
I want a smaller turtle. That doesn't have tons of needs. I dont want it to live over 60 years too.

I think almost all tortoises grow big and live over 60 years.

Redfoots are not a beginner species. They have very specific requirements that are difficult to duplicate indoors.

I suggest researching until you think you know it all, then research some more. Here's a good place to start. Boxies/torts are listed at the bottom

I was looking into Russian Tortoises recently. I decided not to get one right away. I wanted to spend what money I had upgrading my RES tank and my other herp enclosures. But when everyone is set up just the way I want them and when my dog has been to the vet and had her teeth cleaned, maybe then, the next time I come into a few bucks I will start thinking about tortoises again. The Russians look like a beautiful species that stays relatively small (around 8 inches). I'm alittle intimidated by some of the care though...it sounds as if you need to hibernate them...and I am just not cofortable with the idea of sticking my pet in a mini-frige!!!

I think I'm just gonna adopt one. I want a older one. And another question. Is it okay to keep them in for winter and fall?

Update: I narrow my chocies down. They are Eastern Box Turtle, Western Hermanns Turtle or Russian tortoise. If any of these arent avalible I'll get whatever is.
I was think of a Redfoot until I read what Jenareo and ATP said.

every eastern box turtle you would get is going to be wild caught. the babies take for ever to mature into adults, so many petshops purchase WC adults to sell instead of waiting. thats the only reason i'd ward against an EBT
(my hatchling EBT is CB by my neighbor's 4 EBT....)

I just relized that EBTs are illegail in PA. So I am now 99.99% sure I'm gonna get a 3 toed.

Three toeds are my favorite. Izzy is 6 months old now. She's a sweetie.
