Your friend doesn't know what kind of turtle it is? A picture of the turtle when the shell is dry and cleaned up a bitwould be a lot more helpful.

In the first pic it looks like it has red stripes, I might say it's a RES. But dry pictures would be helpful. You could also posts some pics of the turtle's tank.

That doesn't really look like a RES to me....look at the head

Reminds me of some kind of mud/musk turtle..

That last shot looks like the malayan boxie I had but there's no hinge in the plastron so I know that's not what it is.

We really need better quality pics of a dry turtle

Your friend shouldn't be keeping a turtle which he knows nothing about. Not all turtles have the same requirements.

it has live in a tank which has 50cm water depth for 5 years and it's doing well. It eat vegetable, sometimes fish. I think it is a special one.
- It's not a RES because it does not has a yellow stripe in the head.
- It's not a malayan box turtle as it's does not has three yellow stripes in the head, the plastron can not move
- The shell is not smooth like malayan box turtle but rough like a tortoise. The end of the shell is serrated ( like tortoise )
- The leg has a web like turtle but the skin is rough ( like tortoise )

If it has webbed hind feet, it's aquatic, and the scales on it can give it a rough appearance.

The serrated marginal scutes in the rear could be because they've been retained and need to shed.

Can you get a picture of the shell cleaned off (it looks like there's some algae or film on it) and dry?

Try and get some better pics, that will help a lot!

RES have one red stripe going across each side of the head. Not yellow. It does kind of look like there could be some from the pic. The mouth doesn't look much like an RES, but the eyes and shape of the shell do to me.

Where did your friend get him?

I just have to say that since I may be aquiring one, that's definitely not a wood turtle.

I was just trying to clarify that the turtle above isn't what was suggested just in case someone tries to ID theirs. I'm feeling superstitious about even mentioning it, it's a North American wood. Someone I met has one, and although she's really attached to it, she knows she can't give it the care it deserves. We're in negotiations. :) They are supposed to be the most intelligent of turtles and have even been taught to go through mazes. I had the privilege of turtlesitting for the turtle over the Labor Day weekend. The turtle is awesome.

Sweet! Yeah I have read stuff like that too. Mauremys japonica is supposed to be bright too, i believe they have trained them to distinguish different colors :D

You should show us some nice pictures when you get it :)
