After my turtle ate a goldfish (after a few minutes), I observed a large black cauliflower spread of something come out of it's tail bottom side. It then narrowed to a hook shape and went back into the tail. I did not see any deposits left on the aquarium. It happened twice within a minute. What was this???

Someone please advise.

Very scary the way it initially fanned out.

Another question on feeding. Do turtles prefer crickets over goldfish?

Goldfish are too high in fat for the turtles, so don't feed goldfish to your turtle...

I don't know about crickets... someone else will know though

crickets are ok as a treat.. the things you are mentioning are extremely high in protein and should be given only once or twice a month as treats not as a staple of their diet. The best thing to do is to either buy freeze dried crickets or to gut load the crickets yourself (there are numerous posts on this) before you feed them to your turtles.

For fish, try occassionally guppies or minnows rather than goldfish.
