Seems like turtles are getting smarter over the decades ! Piggley with his regular daily feeding get feed by hand a lot. He's getting bigger but is very careful with my fingers. Those days dancing on top of the water like a porpoise are over , but still begs , maturely ! Now there are times I hide the food . He use to just wait until I gave it to him or I push his head underwater to find it better when over exicted. In time he finds it. The past week I just point with my finger not moving my hand towards it in the direction of the stock tank it is in and he goes off and gets it ! This is not just once but on a regular basis. May have some golden retriever in him , some , doesn't bring it back thou he finds it and eats it ! I believe that's pretty smart.

My girls do the same, Splash and carry on when and after I feed them missing the food. I then point to it and they go and find it.

Sorry I must learn how to write better , must be eating to many crawfish. Not food missed in the excitement like the old days. Food I hide first then only point in direction to find it.

I use to love my pondmaster day's still have 6 of them and all work , with 2 being pressurized ones.

Doesn't matter what I point to, they just lock into my eyes and feverishly splash water everywhere

Haha, yeah, I don't know if Sedge is getting any smarter...

It is pretty cute how he responds to any novel objects though. He investigates with his head partly in the shell because anything new is 'oh so scary!'

Mine do that too, it looks pretty awkward when they do a 180 and swim around in that position to make a getaway.

My turtles have gotten their "internal clock" well adjusted. They know they can bask for an hour or two before I wake up, then know when I am going to feed them, then know when I leave for work, as well as when I come back for lunch and when I am done for the day. It's funny, they bask within the hours that I am not home! I set up a baby monitor to record them and saw that. What was also interesting is that, over the course of a few days, they would do it all at similar times of the day - bask from 5:30 - 6:50 A.M., then from 9:00 - 12, then again from 2-5 P.M.; it was rather interesting.

Mine have similar clocks as well, and they can get pretty angry when I'm late with their meals.
