When my turtle was just a little girl I started feeding her by hand, holing a twig out for her to take, and ocasionally she would nip the finger and it would be nothing more than a little pressure. unfortunatly 20 years later our bonding is still good, but her aim just as bad. all I can say is that thumb nails can save chunks of flesh, but the scars will remain.

my neighbor doesnt have a pinky finger from a snapping turtle, they get really, really big in my town, sadly people catch them (hard to do) and have them euthanised because little kids get bit.
