Other Turtle Discussion :: Freezer Babies

Non-care related topics here.

I found this on Turtletimes.com and felt that people should know about it. This information was posted by TurtlePimp.

Basically, breeders take baby red ear sliders and "force" them to hibernate. They do this by cooling them in commercial coolers, like the ones in grocery stores. This is done so Red Ear Sliders can still be sold during the November time period.

Most of them die because they're dehydrated and soft. The bridges collapse and the eyes are usually swollen. Also, when they are cooled, they don't grow leaving them in the "look at the cute little turtle" stage.

The reason I post this is to discourage people from buying red ear sliders around these cold months due to the fact that they may come dead or very sick.

DOH! I thought I found something new, but oh well. If you want to delete I won't be insulted.

Well, hopefully some people learn something new from this post and future owners hold off until April when baby turtles are overwhelming..

A lot of new people don't go back and read the older threads. I don't think that it ever hurts to revisit topics. It's depressing to read about though.

Never hurts to bring up old topics for the new users. Especially things like this. If it helps save someone the heartache of dealing with this, then it's worth repeating.

Ugh! It's amazing how much I have been isolated from all this nasty news about turtles regarding issues with fake-freezing hibernation, bad nutrition, and nasty water conditions until I came to our RES site & started learning about what was really going on in the world. It's scary how much some RES's have to suffer at human hands.
