Other Turtle Discussion :: I am so sad - my two baby RES need a good home!

Hey everyone,

I rescued two baby RES about a month ago and I am getting married in two months - great news on both accounts, but there is a major problem! After much arguing and thought, my fiance and I decided that we are moving to New York City, and I am afraid that I simply will not have the ability to give my two little baby guys enough space. I have wanted pet turtles my entire life, and now that I've had them for a month, they need a new home!

They are still tiny - probably only a few months old, and they are about 1.5 inches long. I resuced them from a friend who was ready to put them in a lake near his house! They are healthy and I have taken very good care of them - can anybody help? I am outside Boston and I am willing to do whatever I can to make sure that they get into some godd, loving hands.

Try www.maturtlerescue.org They don't automatically take in RES, but since yours are still small, it might work in their favor (explain how you rescued them) or point you to someone who could take them. There's also www.turtlehomes.org

I tried the Massachusetts Turtle Rescue but they made it abundantly clear that they want NOTHING to do with RES. They sound grossly understaffed and underfunded, so I suppose I understand this.

I also posted on Turtlehomes.org but they told me that it could be a long long time before anyone shows any interest.

If I cannot find anybody to take them, what do you think about releasing them in my mother's pond on her farm in Vermont? I know that it is very bad to release them back into the wild, but if it is far away from busy roads, isolated, etc., is this still very bad? I just want the best for them!

Do not release them into the pond. They will most likely not survive. It isn't fair to them.

Have you tried placing a classified ad in the paper, or on craigslist? By doing this you can find people who might be interested and still have a way to check potential homes they are going to.

Thank you for the advice - I sort of knew that releasing them is a wrong thing to do, I'm just a beginner! Thank you for the adivce, I will certainly be using every possible forum to see these little guys get a good home.

actually i live in everett a little drive away from boston,im 13 years old but sadly i have a 10 gallon tank with a 1'4 RES with a Fluval Filter,Basking area and heater. But i dont think i can handle 2 more in a small tank and they could start fighting .

i actually live in boston too but honestly i dont think my turtle would be able to handle living with 2 babies... hes bigger (about 6 inches) and hes lived by himself for years now..i think he would probably be agressive if i put them with him.plus, i know you are supposed to give hatchlings a seperate tank... and also, i am in college, living in a dorm, and i dont have space for another set up for the babies. your post actually breaks my heart because i have wanted baby turtles for SOOO long now but i just dont think i can take them because i dont have the room either

i would love to have them but i have a 30 gal and 2 res just 1 inch and i am a begener aand i live in texas so im way to far
