Well I have started growing anacharis, and I have them in a medium size bucket with gravel on the bottom with around 10 stalks planted on the bottom and 3 small sized stalks floating. But I have noticed they don't float much allot of the times they are just resting on the bottom of the bucket.... What does that mean?
Also any tips on growing them? I have a 20 watt house bulb over them for 15 hours a day is that enough light? Also the water temperature around 75

I don't know a whole lot about growing plants, but I have heard that CFL bulbs usually work really well for growing plants.
When I was growing water lettuce and water hyacinth outside, I'd change the water with turtle water. Unless you're fertilizing, I'd say keep swapping out the water with "fresh" turtle water at least once a week.

When I grew anachris in a separate container, I just kept it in a south window where it got plenty of light (this was in the winter). I think keeping it in a tank where it gets more light than in a bucket would be better in cooler weather. Really warm water and no filtration will encourage it to rot. Some of the nicest anachris I've had was in a tank with a hatchling that had yet to show any interest in it. It had relatively warm filtered water, good lighting and nutrients in the water (from the turtle).

The bucket is no where near a window, Also what filter would I have to get for it? Does it really need one?

It will eventually rot without sufficient lighting (and a little tank would allow a lot more lighting than a bucket that's not even near a window). You don't absolutely need a filter, but you will have to do at least partial water changes on occasion.

I have a bulb over it that gives off allot of light, What are some early signs of them rotting?

The leaves turn brownish and then pale, the plant turns mushy. It's the same as any plant rotting.

Oh, mine are a dark green I don't see any brown on the leaves.
I was wondering do I have to put some kind of water conditioner for them? Or is normal tap water fine?

I used normal tap water.

Oh okay cool they are still alive and growing pretty quick. Ranger eats them right away when I put them in his tank. I just wish he would do the same with normal store bought lettuce its allot more cheaper.

Hello everyone,

I apologize in advance if I'm reviving an old topic, but I'm new to growing anacharis, and this thread seemed an excellent source of information to get me started. Firstly, I'd like to thank those who have already shared their experiences here, as I've found many useful answers to my initial questions.

That said, as the discussion is a little dated, I'm wondering if some of the information might be out of date, or if more recent methods have come to light since then. Here are a few questions to get me started:

On the subject of lighting: With LED bulbs now more accessible, is this a good alternative to CFL bulbs for growing anacharis? If so, do you have any advice on the best wattage or light temperature?

About water quality: Back in the day, tap water seemed to be used directly. Is this still good practice, or are there additional precautions to be taken today (chlorine treatment, for example)?

For temperature and maintenance: Ranger mentioned water at 24°C and partial water changes. Is this still the ideal method, or are there other approaches better suited to optimizing plant growth?

Last but not least: I'm also wondering whether placing a bucket or tub near a bright window is still relevant, or whether other modern equipment or techniques might be better suited.

Finally, if you've discovered any other tips or techniques since this thread and this page, I'd love to hear about them!

Thanks again to everyone for any feedback. Reviving an old topic may not be ideal, but I haven't found a better place to ask my questions.

You can definitely use either type of bulb, though it needs to be a specific kind to be a grow light. I've had some success just by keeping it next to a window. With a small setup, you don't really need a powerful bulb here.

Generally, tap water is still fine. Anacharis is pretty hardy IME, though I wouldn't let it get too warm (above 30°C) for long periods.
