I've seen it happen. Small alligators like that don't eat turtles that big. Once the gators are full grown, then it's game time.

We went to Gatorland in Orlando, Florida a few years ago. We were standing around the Turtle pond watching the turtles. There was what looked like a large rock that about 4 or 5 turtles were basking on. It turned out to be a large Snapping Turtle they were basking on. The turtles never moved, even when the snapper snapped at a passing fish.

Turtles smarter than Gators. Why swim, when you can hitch a ride?

@steve I would never allow my child to do that, but if Gators were different that would be pretty awesome!
