Winter Welcome! November / October
For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the winter months present some challenges. It's especially important now to be sure the turtle tank is equipped with a good water heater to keep water temperatures constant at about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 78 degrees for turtles under 4". It is said that a good water heater is the best preventive medicine you can provide for your turtle since chilly turtles are susceptible to respiratory infections. If the area your tank is in is especially cool at night, a light blanket or towel draped over the tank can help hold in the heat.
The holiday season is a good time to consider those equipment upgrades you've been meaning to make. Good filters, lighting, heaters, basking platforms and decorations for the tank make great presents.
If you are traveling this winter for more than a day or two and have to leave your turtle behind, we recommend planning ahead. You'll find tips on keeping your turtle safe and healthy while you are away along with many other helpful topics on RedEarSlider.com.
