For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the winter months present some challenges. It's especially important now to be sure the turtle tank is equipped with a good water heater to keep water temperatures constant at about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 78 degrees for turtles under 4". It is said that a good water heater is the best preventive medicine you can provide for your turtle since chilly turtles are susceptible to respiratory infections. If the area your tank is in is especially cool at night, a light blanket or towel draped over the tank can help hold in the heat.
The holiday season is a good time to consider those equipment upgrades you've been meaning to make. Good filters, lighting, heaters, basking platforms and decorations for the tank make great presents.
